Steel or synthetics? With winch ropes that is often something of a religious question. However, the trend is now quite clearly to high-performance synthetic fibers, the steel in the ratio strength to weight are often superior and otherwise bring in handling many benefits.
The advantages of our 30 m synthetic rope compared to steel are manifold, but above all there are two main arguments: safety and weight. When steel cables break, heavy, sharp-edged metal lashes through the air uncontrollably, causing damage and the worst possible injuries. Should our new 2.3 kg light rope really reach the 9.5 t breaking load once, the ends will simply fall to the ground.
Even when handling the steel cable, cuts caused by loose or broken wires are not uncommon, but excluded in synthetics. In addition, the much lighter Dyneem rope not only relieves the operator, the car also benefits in terms of statics and driving characteristics. Synthetic ropes are low maintenance, washable, easy to roll up and down due to low friction, and are less sensitive to UV, chemical and oil products, abrasion and fatigue due to kinking than many other synthetic fibers. They absorb hardly any water and are extremely flexible with a low length elasticity of around 5%.
The high-quality workmanship of our synthetic rope is shown in detail:To accommodate the pull hook in the eye splice, the 12mm thimble is made of stainless steel, as well as the 7 mm eyelet for attachment to the winch. Additional protection against frictional heat and abrasion is provided by polyester protective sleeves on both ends of the rope. So that nothing rubs off or splices at the splices, they are hot-shrink-sealed.

If you are frequently recovering off-road vehicles stuck in mud, dirt or sand, kinetic recovery ropes are the ultimate solution. The decisive advantage these elastic synthetic ropes have over more rigid traditional straps or plastic ropes is their ability to store kinetic energy from the towing vehicle. This stored energy can build in the elastic rope and is then transferred continuously and smoothly to the trapped vehicle. Primarily, there are two positive effects when recovering cars or 4x4s with kinetic ropes. The rope’s elasticity compensates for sudden load peaks when the towing vehicle inadvertently jerks forward or transfers sudden jolts of force to the rope. This in turn means that the breaking strength of the rope won’t be tested as quickly and damages to vehicles or equipment are prevented. The second effect is that lighter vehicles can recover heavier ones, because the kinetic energy transferred from the towing vehicle can build in the rope until the resisting force is neutralized. The rope will stretch by an additional 30 to 35 %. The easiest method on both the rope and the vehicle recovery points is a slow and steady build-up of momentum until the rope snaps back and frees the trapped vehicle. Our rope allows for a safe temperature range from -70 to 99°C, which is highly superior to conventional ropes. Urethane-polymer coating makes our orange KINTO ropes highly water-, UV and abrasion-resistant. From a safety point of view, we would like to mention, though, that workload and breaking strength can be greatly reduced in damaged or overextended ropes. Anyone who has opted for high-performance synthetic materials for mountain equipment will benefit from cascading solutions. One steel part after the other can be replaced in the module chain with lightweight and synthetics. With the decision to use a synthetic winch rope, the classic deflection pulley, with its wearing parts, the high weight and the tendency to get stuck, also had its day.
With so-called NMP pulleys - "No Moving Parts" - nothing rolls anymore. In principle, it is only a rope guide block, through which synthetic ropes glide easily, even under high loads, due to the low frictional resistance. This does NOT work with steel cables!
Our Nakatanenga Heavy Duty pulley made of hard anodized aluminum for ropes from 8-14 mm is manufactured according to military standard MIL-A-8625F TYPE III, has a breaking load of 18 t and weighs only 1.65 kg. The large radius of the "reel" is particularly important in the off-road area, since dirt and foreign objects cannot easily affect the cable routing.
The NMP roll is fastened with the supplied 10 mm thick soft shackle with a breaking strength of up to 12 t, optionally in gray or orange. You can also order the pulley individually, without shackles.

In principle, soft shackles are incredibly low tech: They are simple rope loops with a stopper knot and a fixed noose. The shackle is held together and tightened by the very load it is meant to hold and is easily opened or fastened. Maybe it is the very simplicity of the concept that accounts for some users’ skepticism and lets them stick to steel shackles even when using synthetic rope. But a rope shackle’s advantages are huge: there is hardly any risks for injury, very little weight, no tools necessary, no corrosion, no scratching or denting of vehicle or equipment parts und no bending or jamming under load.
As with all synthetic ropes, extra caution should be taken to avoid friction damage, fraying, heat and contact with chemicals.

Wer feststeckende Offroader öfters mal aus Schlamm oder Sand befreien muss, für den sind kinetische Seile das Nonplusultra. Der entscheidende Vorteil dieser elastischen Synthetikseile gegenüber starren Seilen oder Gurten liegt in ihrer Fähigkeit kinetische Energie des Zugfahrzeugs zu speichern und dann je nachdem potenziert und dosiert wieder abzugeben.
Dies führt in der Hauptsache zu zwei positiven Effekten beim Bergen: Durch die Elastizität des Seiles kommt es auch bei ungleichmäßigem Zug und Ruckbewegungen nicht so leicht zu plötzlichen Lastspitzen und Überschreitungen der Bruchlast im Seil bzw. den Zughalterungen an den Fahrzeugen. Schäden an Berge-Equipment und Wagen werden also leichter vermieden. Und zweitens führt es auch dazu, dass feststeckende, schwerere Fahrzeuge auch von leichteren Zugfahrzeugen befreit werden können, weil sich die kinetische Energie im Seil aufbauen kann bis der Widerstand überwunden ist.
Unser kinetisches KINTO-Bergeseil („Kinetic Tow“) aus doppelt geflochtenem Nylon und Polyamid 6.6. ist 24 mm stark, 8 m lang und weist eine Bruchlast von 13 Tonnen auf. Das bedeutet, dass die entscheidende Arbeitsbelastung WLL bei einem Sicherheitsfaktor von 3 über 2,65 / 4 Tonnen beträgt.
Die Zugdehnung des Seils liegt dabei bei maximal 30 bis 35 %, wobei die materialschonendste Methode des Freischleppens ein langsames, gleichmäßiges Anfahren in den Dehnungsbereich hinein ist. Der sichere Temperaturbereich liegt bei -70 bis 99 °C und ist damit konventionellen Seilen weit überlegen.
Unser KINTO-Seil ist durch eine Urethan-Polymerbeschichtung in hohem Wasser-, UV- und abriebbeständig. Aus Sicherheitsgründen weisen wir dennoch vorsorglich darauf hin, dass Arbeits- und Bruchlast bei abgenutzten oder überdehnten Seilen extrem sinken kann. Eine schonende Behandlung wird also in jedem Fall empfohlen.

Mesh carrying bag for mountain ropes
Our robust and easy-to-clean Polyester mesh bag was initially developed by our Nakatanenga textile shop to hold the kinetic tow ropes. The big Kinto rope with 8 m length and 24 mm width fits perfectly into this 60 x 35 cm bag. Apart from the ropes, this mesh bag is absolutely perfect for everything else that comes dirty and dripping: sports shoes and hiking boots, rain gear, training equipment, water sports, you name it.
Using mesh as the primary material for bag, also means much nicer handling in comparison to ordinary closed materials. You can quickly pack wet and dirty ropes and let them drain and dry in the bag. That way, there is no chance for trapped moisture to contribute to any material deterioration and unpleasant moldy smells.
You can also use the mesh itself to grab and handle excessively dirty equipment without having to use your bare hands, if nothing else is available. That comes in especially handy in emergency recoveries on the road, because you’re never as likely to carry all the dirt into your car’s interior. After the job is done, you can easily hose down the rope within the bag.

Nakatanenga winch window for plastic ropes

In the module chain from the winch to the hook, winch windows play an important but often underestimated part. Once you have opted for ultra-light but high-strength synthetic mountain equipment, the rope windows are indispensable for safe and comfortable use. But winch window is not the same as winch window: a quality product improves handling and extends the service life of the ropes even more.
That's why we now set up our own Nakatanenga winch window made of hard anodized aluminum. Harteloxal is an electrolytically produced outer layer which, in addition to improved wear, corrosion and UV protection, also achieves excellent sliding properties. With these characteristics, the rope window conforms to military standard MIL-A-8625F TYPE III.
In addition, our winch window is also significantly lower than many other products on the market. This guarantees a smaller bending angle when the rope is rolled up. This protects the synthetic fibers and ensures that dirt is wiped well before the rope winds on the roll.
