Genuine Land Rover alternator in the classic A127 65 A specification, suitable for a range of Land Rover Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic models.
The alternator – also referred to as a generator – supplies the vehicle's electrical system whilst the engine is running and simultaneously charges the starter battery. As a Genuine Land Rover replacement part, STC233 is particularly suitable for repairs, maintenance and restorations where original specification is important.
The STC233 is based on the proven A127 alternator design and provides a rated output of 65 A for a 12 V electrical system.
This alternator was used across a number of classic Land Rover applications and is especially suitable where STC233 or the corresponding earlier or reference part number is specified for the vehicle.

What does the alternator do?
The alternator is driven by the engine and converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Whilst the vehicle is running, it supplies electrical consumers including:
- vehicle lighting
- ignition and engine electrical systems
- heater and blower
- windscreen wipers
- electrical accessories
- vehicle battery
At the same time, it charges the starter battery and, together with the voltage regulator, helps maintain a stable electrical system voltage.
A reliable alternator is particularly important on older Defender, Discovery and Range Rover models, especially where additional electrical equipment such as auxiliary lighting, refrigerators, radios or other off-road accessories is fitted.
Typical signs of alternator failure
Possible symptoms of a worn or defective alternator include:
- illuminated or flickering battery warning lamp
- battery no longer charging correctly
- dim or flickering lights
- fluctuating system voltage
- electrical equipment cutting out
- unusual bearing or grinding noises
Before replacing the alternator, the battery, earth connections, wiring and drive belt should also be inspected.
