Nakatanenga CargoBear 2.0 – Lightweight Roof Rack for Land Rover Defender 90, 110 & 130
When it comes to sheer performance, our CargoBear has always been the Grizzly among roof racks. Strong, sturdy and extremely versatile, it was already well ahead of its time when we introduced it in 2016. But the world keeps turning, evolution never stands still – and anything that wants to survive in nature has to keep evolving.
Leaner and meaner, as boxers say, the new bear – the CargoBear 2.0 – emerges from its den in Berg. Same load capacity, same strength, same rigidity, but with a significantly reduced fighting weight. Around 30 % less weight on the scales also means around 30 % less weight on the vehicle roof. And on top of that, the new CargoBear is considerably less expensive!
How did we do it? The crucial difference lies in the new construction. Instead of the heavy longitudinal beams, newly developed perforated HIGRIP plate modules and edge plates now provide the longitudinal bracing, achieving the same structural values with a considerable reduction in weight.
One point is especially important to us: the CargoBear 2.0 is manufactured entirely by Nakatanenga in Germany. All production and finishing steps take place either in-house or with specialised companies from our region. It is elaborate and certainly not the cheapest way to build a roof rack – but for us it is the right one: short distances, direct communication and the highest standards for materials, workmanship and quality. Made in Germany – not just as a sticker, but from the first component to the finished roof rack.
The CargoBear 2.0 has been designed for a load capacity of 300 kg off-road (with an evenly distributed load). On the road, this value could theoretically be doubled. However, two points that apply to roof racks in general must always be kept in mind: First, a loaded roof rack can significantly raise the vehicle’s centre of gravity, which is especially important off-road. Second, the decisive limit when loading the roof rack is the vehicle manufacturer’s permitted roof load, which in most cases is significantly lower than the load capacity of the rack itself.
Some things remain unchanged on the new bear: the jet-black, super-flat look, the high-performance material and the modular versatility. All accessories, add-on components, roof tents etc. are fully compatible with the first generation.
And last but not least, the previous, heavier CargoBear with longitudinal beams and chequer plate continues to be available exclusively for classic Defenders requiring specific heavy-duty applications.
Matching accessories are available in our shop, including the end crossbar, the wind deflector and the angled wind deflector – perfectly matched for even greater functionality and comfort.
- When using a snorkel, the wind deflector may need to be adjusted.
- On Defenders with a pop-up / lifting roof, the original vehicle roof is often shortened. In this case, the roof rack may not fit. Please measure beforehand or contact us in advance if there are any questions.
- The CargoBear can be used on an Alu-Cab pop-up roof.

Measured from the gutter, the CargoBear is approx. 23 cm high. It adds approx. 5–6 cm above the roof itself – depending on the roof, its condition, model year etc.

Self-adhesive anti-slip pads Perforated metal sheets, as used on our CargoBear roof racks, on ladders, steps and other climbing aids on vehicles, are much safer than regular metal surfaces. Additional anti-slip pads, however, offer an unbeatable safety advantage, especially in wet or dirty conditions. The anti-slip pads are designed to perfectly match the hole patterns and due to its black color, they also compliment the overall look of our products. The material for the pads originates in the sports sector and has been widely used on skateboards, for example. For the CargoBear, we offer ready-cut, self-adhesive anti-slip pads measuring 16 x 24 cm individually or in sets of 3, 6 or 12. Please note: the multi-packs provide increasing savings regarding the price per item. Since the pads are manufactured with in-house laser cutting technology, we can supply custom formats on request.

Fastening set for AluBoxes on Nakatanenga CargoBear 1.0 and 2.0 Probably the easiest and safest way to mount an AluBox on CargoBear 1 or 2: Our customised fastening solution consists of 4 brackets that screw the box base firmly to the roof rack from the inside. This not only serves to secure the box for transport, but also prevents it from being quickly stolen on the road when it is locked. Mounting the brackets is child's play. Apart from the tools, everything you need is included. You can download detailed instructions from our web shop, where you will of course also find a large selection of matching aluminium boxes.

Nakatanenga CargoBear Awning Bracket The Nakatanenga CargoBear Awning Bracket allows a wide range of standard awnings to be securely attached to the CargoBear roof rack. The bracket is not limited to specific awning types, but is suitable for a variety of different manufacturers and models. Suitable for CargoBear roof racks on the following vehicles Land Rover Defender up to model year 2016 Mercedes G-Class Ineos Grenadier Not suitable for the CargoBear roof rack on the Suzuki Jimny or the Land Rover New Defender from 2020 onwards! The awning bracket can be used on CargoBear roof racks with 30° feet and is compatible with both CargoBear 1.0 and CargoBear 2.0. Compatible awnings The brackets are suitable for a wide range of standard awning models, including, for example: RoofLodge Awnings Rhino-Rack Foxwing Rhino-Rack Sunseeker The models listed are merely a selection. Depending on the mounting system, numerous other awnings can also be fitted. Installation and contents of the pack At least two CargoBear crossbars are required for installation. More grip, less risk - rubber cover profiles for the Nakatanenga CargoBear How do you improve the CargoBear? By clicking our rubber covers into fully or partially unused lashing openings in the rack. With our 30 mm wide and 10 cm long strips, you can quickly and securely seal the gaps. The rubber covers give you a whole range of noticeable advantages. Firstly, they improve load safety on the already very slip resistant CargoBear even further. When you position the cargo on top of the rubber strips, the ribbed surface structure prevents the lashed down cargo from sliding. A second effect is created by the rubbers’ added height of 3.5 mm, which lifts the cargo off the actual rack, preventing scratching or damages to both. And last but not least, the covers also prevent vegetation from getting trapped or stuck in the sideways rails when off-roading. The covers sport rounded edges for a better fit. The rubber cover strips for the CargoBear can be ordered in sets of 6 or 24 respectively. One crossbar requires a set of 6 for Defender, Jimny or G-Class. A set of 24 covers one cargo panel with the above-mentioned 4x4s, i.e. the minimum configuration of 2 cross bars and one panel requires 2 sets of 6 and one set of 24.
