Israeli Bandage Pack, 4"
When it comes to first aid after life-threatening accidents, the most important things to have are training, regular practice and quick access to proper first response equipment. This holds true for rescuing others as well as treating one’s own injuries if help is far away. Even with the most traumatic injuries, there is a great chance for survival if correct measures are taken immediately. The initial 5 minutes after the injury are crucial for first response, as is the so-called “golden hour” in which an injured person should then be delivered into professional medical care.
In an emergency or after an accident, a well-applied compression bandage is often enough to give an injured person valuable time until medical help is available. The so-called Israeli bandage is a versatile emergency pressure bandage and can even be applied single-handedly. It was designed by an Israeli military medic specifically for the battlefield and is now the standard emergency wound dressing with the US Army and many other forces.
The Israeli bandage consists of sterile compression bandage material with an attached plastic pressure applicator and a closure bar. This system will stop hemorrhaging quickly and effectively and it can be applied by the injured persons themselves if no medical assistance is available. The dressing is placed on the wound, wrapped around and then laced through the pressure bar. By pulling the dressing into the opposite direction, pressure is applied to the wound and the bleeding is under control. The finished dressing is then fixed by hooking the closure bar into the elastic material. An Israeli bandage is a must-have item in any first aid kit, especially when your work or your hobbies come with a greater risk of injury.
If you want to put a trauma kit together, you should also consider a TCCC tourniquet to stop arterial bleeding in extremities and a vented chest seal to apply to penetrating, open chest wounds.
CAUTION: In order to execute first aid procedures effectively and safely, the techniques for applying emergency dressings or bandages like an Israeli bandage should be practiced regularly – ideally in connection with first aid courses.
